Ichimatsu Pattern Pillow | Japanese Checkerboard with Wave Crest
Ichimatsu (市松) is the Japanese checkerboard. Named after the Edo period kabuki actor Sanogawa Ichimatsu, who wore it on stage, the unbroken grid stands for continuity and prosperity that spreads without end.
In the centre sits our original crest, a circle of seigaiha (青海波, "waves of the blue sea") waves. It is a Mojinami mark, not a family crest.
